Gerrit Cole was born in the LA area. BUt his dad is from Syracuse and a staunch Yankees fan. Cole went to the 2001 World Series when he was 11. He was photographed with a sign "Yankee fan today tomorrow forever." He went home and forgot about the sign. But his parents kept it. When Cole signed with the Yankees in 2019, his parents pulled out the sign. He was shocked as hell. And did the only thing he could. He took the sign, weathered and battered, to his introductory press conference.![]()
His parents wanted him to get a degree in case baseball didnt pan out, which is why he declined the Yankees offer and went to UCLA, where, incidentally, he met his future wifeJune 5, 2008: Drafted by the New York Yankees in the 1st round (28th pick) of the 2008 amateur draft, but did not sign.
June 6, 2011: Drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1st round (1st pick) of the 2011 amateur draft. Player signed August 15, 2011.
The Yankees wanted to sign him out of high school and were going to give him a 4 million dollar signing bonus...He declined opting to go to UCLA....Hmmm how much of a fan was he really?
And I suspect his dad told him never to root for the Dodgers because they were the same hated Yankees rivals from BrooklynGerrit Cole was born in the LA area. No outfield wall and horse-drawn carriages at the 1905 World Series at the Polo Grounds where the New York Giants and Philadelphia Athletics were playing.
Okay I admit it...I'm distracting from the pain of that loss.
Great photo and distraction welcomed.View attachment 370913

Ben Johnson was asked what he thought of Garrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton, "they are cheetahs".
That is baseball.Aside from Stanton's homer, I thought the game was kind of boring until the bottom of the 8th.
