When Wrestling was Fun

This thread has reminded me about the NWO. I’ve searched all kinds of stuff on YouTube in the past couple of days. The NWO was revolutionary in so many ways. I think it was the first real time where it was OK to like a bad guy. Changed the complexity of wrestling in so many ways. I think Hogan has solidified himself as the greatest superstar in wrestling history, after what he accomplished in WCW with the NWO. I don’t think anyone had ever made it cool to like the bad guy until Hollywood Hogan.

Rocco vs Cena was a ratings winner for the WWE. Cena was on the Tonight Show...don't like Jimmy Fallon.

Mark isn't telling the full story. Koko was terrified and involuntarily farted in his face as the tombstone was being set up.

I’ve really been enjoying the “dark side of the ring” and “tales from the territories” shows. Even the wwe produced biography shows are decent too. Takes me back

This thread had me searching all kinds of wrestling stuff on my YouTube. Now my for you page is like an encyclopedia of Wrestlemania. But I have learned a lot about the “attitude” era and I needed that education lol.

Just watched the 2 days of Wrestlemania XL, my first Wrestlemania after 15 years. Man what has it come to. There were a couple of good matches in there, but just over the top, showy, flashy, too polished, too plasticky and predictable. To add to it the crowd was DEAD. It was like watching Wimbledon. SMH. The wacky, unpredictable and edgy wrestling shows with huge and energetic and rowdy crowd pops of the mid 90s to the mid 2000s, has been replaced with this nonsense. Ugh. With their Netflix deal, it is going to be even more "family friendly".

You want "wacky, unpredictable and edgy" go for a drive in Brampton. 🤣

But I agree with everything else you said.

I was wondering what they will eventually be like on Netflix. I hope it isn’t more family friendly on the streaming service. I want a bit more bite to these stories.

They still are relying on attitude era stars to create interest.

yes it’s pretty sad. And we can’t even watch Vince McMahon and his soap opera anymore lol.

I’ve always wondered, was there an actual day where Vince McMahon stepped out of the broadcast booth and proclaimed himself as the owner? All I know is one day he’s a broadcaster and 10 years later he’s the owner. Eric Bishoff must have have really scared the daylights out of him to get more involved like that.

Personally, that's when I lost interest...when Vince McMahon became a front line star and even more when Shane and Stephanie and the mother became visuals.

And it was some of the best segments, especially with Stone Cold. Vince was a great mic worker too. Bischoff scared the heck out of him, and out of that fear, came the Attitude Era. God bless Bischoff for that lol.

I need to find the episode where he says “I’m not the same as Gorilla Monsoon I am actually the owner of the WWF.”

I started losing interest when they brought in zombies and clowns [Undertaker and Doink] at that point they stopped asking me to suspend my belief and started insulting my intelligence.
Then came the Douchebag oh I mean "attitude" era.
Watched it a bit recently and holy fuck, it turned into some whiny emu shit. Also no homo, but I kinda miss the massive steroids they were on, sure you had the quick high flyers and that was good, but the rest looked like over the top superheros. Now they are more mundane looking AND slow.

It's a bad sign when they have to keep the old stars in, double plus so considering how damaging the game is to the players, they seem to be dropping like flies. Hulk Hogan was wrestling into his 90s it seemed.

Oh well you can never go back.
