Answer: an Orangutan was the animal. "Manis" the orangutan, was Clint Eastwood's sidekick in "Every Which Way But Loose". 2 other orangutans were used in the sequel "Evert Which Way You Can".

Manis , a few years later starred as a talking ape in the short lived tv series, "Mr. Smith"
