Actually, all thing considered, the average porn girl makes peanuts. $400-$800 per straight scene minus agency fees of 10%-15%. Compared to that escorting is a lot more lucrative. Keep in mind that a scene does not take an hour, it can take many hours, but the pay stays the same. That's the reason most porn girls escort and/or strip. Only the top girls can command higher rates. The real money is on the other side of the camera, of course.
Well, sort of. There are so many girls and the abundance of tube (free) porn and cam girls has really affected the porn industry so the rates keep dropping and there are so many girls willing to do it that if someone says No there's always another girl to take her place. Thus, escorting as a means of making real money. The strip club circuit isn't dead (in the US) but it isn't what it used to be and more girls are escorting than stripping now. As well, escorting doesn't have quite the negative vibe that it used to (probably because everyone's doing it now).
But you are correct that the girls do the mental math and figure that they can make more money with less effort escorting than they can shooting porn and/or stripping. The latter in particular has fallen off as stripping can be a read grind on the road relative to the amount of money they earn doing it. The glory days of pornstar feature dancers are long gone.
The porn industry is VERY shady and even the people "behind the cameras" aren't making money like they used to. There's lots of rumours that big name producers are quietly selling their own content to tube sites (thus undermining the industry for their own personal profit), which I assume pay them from the advertising money they take in.
Long story short, making money in porno movies is much harder for the girls today than it was even 10 years ago. They have to do a lot more for less in an industry with an ever-shrinking pie. Which is why most girls move into escorting (which still has inflated pornstar pricing) to make real money.
I find it interesting that some porn stars will offer the complete PSE. BBFS provided the you have medical records of your STD tests. I won't even try and not worth the effort and risk.
